Shubman Gill creates history with ton vs RR, becomes first player in world to achieve unprecedented IPL feat

Shubman Gill created history and achieved multiple unprecedented feat after guiding Gujarat Titans (GT) to the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) after they beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the second qualifier by seven wickets with eight balls to spare. The 26-year-old was the star of the show with the fifth IPL century of his career, with a knock of 104 runs in 53 balls.

The Titans' skipper's ton helped the 2022 champions chase down a total of 215 with ease as he put up a 167-run opening partnership with Sai Sudharsan (58 of 32). His record-breaking knock included 15 boundaries and three sixes.

Shubman Gill Creates History

Gill has become the first player to score multiple centuries in IPL playoff matches. He had previously also scored a ton in the second qualifier of the 2023 edition against the Mumbai Indians (MI) with a knock of 129 in Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. That stands as the record of the highest individual score in a playoff match in the league's history.

Meanwhile, Gill reached the three-figure mark in just 47 balls, which makes it the quickest playoff ton in the league's history. The record previously belonged to Rajat Patidar, who reached the three-figure mark in 49 balls against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 2022 edition's eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Kolkata's Eden Gardens.

Gill is also the first captain with a century in the playoffs of the IPL. He went past a record shared by Patidar and David Warner for the highest individual score in the playoff stage of the tournament.

The Indian Test and ODI skipper also became the youngest player to hit five centuries in the league's history. Previously, no player had more than three centuries at the age of 26.

Meanwhile, he is the youngest captain to score 700 runs in a season and the second-youngest player behind opening partner Sai Sudarsan.

Gill also became the first opening batter to score over 500 runs in IPL playoff matches. Overall, only Suresh Raina (714) has more runs than him in this stage of the competition. The GT skipper now has 581 runs in playoffs and went past MS Dhoni (523) on the second spot.

Gill will become the first captain to play an IPL final for the same team he has featured in the summit clash as a player too. Kane Williamson and Sachin Tendulkar have been part of squads that they led in the final but did not feature in the playing XI of the summit clash.
