5 auto-rickshaws crushed, 8 injured as BEST bus runs amok in Mumbai's Andheri

At least six to eight people were injured after a BEST bus lost control after allegedly a brake failure and rammed into multiple vehicles on SV Road in Mumbai's Andheri area on Friday afternoon, officials said.

According to officials, the accident took place around 4.15 pm when the bus, operating on Route 242 from Millat Nagar to Andheri Bus Station (West), was taking a right turn from Caesar Road onto the southbound carriageway of SV Road.

The bus reportedly lost control after its brakes failed and crashed into 14 vehicles, including nine auto-rickshaws, four private cars and a three-wheeler tempo. Several auto-rickshaws were badly damaged in the collision.

The injured were rushed to Cooper Hospital and nearby private hospitals for treatment. Their exact medical condition is yet to be confirmed.

The damaged bus was later towed to the BEST's Andheri West bus station.

Police have taken the bus driver, 30-year-old Sahil Suryakant Sawant, and the conductor, 35-year-old Kiran Appa Chawan, to DN Nagar Police Station for questioning. Both are employed by the private operator that runs the bus under BEST's wet lease model.

This is the second major accident involving a BEST bus operating under the wet lease model in recent days. On Wednesday, an electric BEST bus allegedly hit several vehicles while reversing in Mumbai's Bhandup area, leaving one person injured.
