Dark purple, juicy and slightly sweet with a tangy taste, jamun is one of India's most loved summer fruits. But if you've ever wondered what it is called in English, the answer is Java plum. The fruit is also widely known as Indian blackberry, while some regions and references call it black plum.
Native to the Indian subcontinent, jamun is enjoyed fresh, added to drinks and desserts, and has long been part of traditional diets across the country.
THE ENGLISH NAME OF JAMUN
The most commonly accepted English name for jamun is Java plum. Depending on the country or publication, you may also come across names such as Indian blackberry, Malabar plum and black plum.
Its scientific name is Syzygium cumini, an evergreen tree that belongs to the myrtle family.
WHERE DOES JAMUN GROW?
Jamun grows widely across India, as well as in countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and parts of Southeast Asia. The fruit usually appears during the summer and early monsoon months, making it a seasonal favourite in local markets.
The tree is known for its dense shade, fragrant flowers and deep purple fruits that ripen between May and July in many parts of India.
WHY IS JAMUN SO POPULAR?
Jamun is loved for its unique sweet-and-tangy flavour and juicy texture. It can be eaten fresh or used to prepare juices, sherbets, jams, squashes and desserts.
The fruit is also rich in nutrients, including vitamin C, iron, potassium and antioxidants. Because of its naturally low glycaemic index, jamun is often included as part of a balanced diet, although people with medical conditions should follow advice from their healthcare provider.
